Germany has ruled out joining a Western initiative to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mike Carney, Merz emphasized that Germany’s position on Palestinian recognition remains firm. “The federal government’s position is clear regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state,” he said. “Canada is aware of this. We will not join this initiative. We do not consider the conditions for state recognition to have been met in any way at this time.”
Merz stressed that Germany sees recognition of Palestine as a final step within a broader framework of a two-state solution, enabling Israelis and Palestinians to live peacefully alongside each other.
In contrast, Prime Minister Carney announced last month that Canada plans to recognize Palestine during the UN General Assembly in September. Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron intends to support recognition, while the United Kingdom has threatened to recognize Palestine if certain conditions with Israel are not met. Carney explained that deteriorating prospects for a two-state solution were a key factor in Canada’s decision.
The announcements highlight diverging approaches among Western allies on the sensitive issue of Palestinian statehood, with Germany maintaining a cautious stance while others move toward formal recognition.
