Greek PM Receives U.S. Invitation to Gaza Reconstruction Peace Council

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has received an invitation to participate in the Peace Council meeting focused on the second phase of the reconstruction plan for Gaza.

According to sources, the invitation was extended by U.S. President Donald Trump, and Athens is expected to respond in the coming days.

Cyprus has received a similar invitation. The Cyprus News Agency reports that President Nikos Christodoulides was formally invited to join the council as a founding member. Official sources in Nicosia confirmed receipt of a letter from the U.S. president, calling on Cyprus to participate.

The Peace Council is expected to include 25 countries, including those that attended the ceremony in Sharm El-Sheikh, which President Christodoulides also attended.

Axios reports that the council meeting will take place in Washington, at the United States Institute of Peace, and will focus on coordinating next steps for post-war reconstruction in Gaza and regional political stabilization.

During his arrival at the extraordinary European Council summit in Brussels a few weeks ago, the Greek prime minister had expressed Greece’s reservations, shared by the majority of EU member states, about how the U.S. initiative has been presented. He noted that the proposed framework falls outside United Nations mandates, raising institutional concerns.

Mitsotakis suggested that invited countries participate only in the Gaza-specific segment and for as long as necessary, describing it as a pragmatic compromise that avoids the creation of a new organization in competition with the UN.
