Greece has introduced a new digital tool designed to help the public easily identify areas where fishing is restricted, through an interactive online map displaying up-to-date information on regulated zones across the country’s seas.
The platform, launched by the Fisheries Control Directorate (HCG), aims to provide clear and reliable guidance on where professional fishing activities are prohibited, enhancing transparency and supporting compliance with national maritime regulations.
Interactive map shows restricted fishing zones
The new system allows users to view an electronic map that highlights active and inactive fishing restriction areas in real time, based on the date of each search. The tool is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, offering a visual overview of regulated maritime zones.
According to the announcement, the platform includes detailed information on different types of fishing restrictions, including areas with protected marine vegetation such as Posidonia seagrass beds, as defined by relevant environmental legislation.
It also outlines zones where specific fishing methods are restricted, including purse seine fishing and trawling, two commonly used commercial fishing techniques.
Legal references and regulatory transparency
In addition to visual mapping, the platform provides users with references to the applicable legal framework for each restricted area, allowing for greater transparency and easier access to regulatory information.
Authorities say the initiative represents a step forward in modernizing how fishing regulations are communicated to the public, particularly fishermen and maritime professionals who need up-to-date information on permitted activities.
Part of wider digital modernization effort
The Fisheries Control Directorate stated that the new service forms part of a broader effort to upgrade digital communication tools between public authorities and citizens, improving accessibility and ensuring more efficient dissemination of regulatory updates.
The platform is now available to the public via the official website of the Fisheries Control Directorate, offering nationwide coverage of fishing restriction zones in Greek waters.
