On Monday, the government held its first cabinet meeting after the summer break. During his opening remarks, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced upcoming measures against high prices and made sure to send a clear message to Turkey.

The Prime Minister addressed Ankara’s reactions to Greece’s Special Spatial Planning Frameworks for renewable energy and tourism. “The reactions from the east that follow our own actions do not affect our planning. Areas under Greek sovereignty are established under international law, and we are ready to defend them at any moment,” he said.

Mitsotakis went on to state: “We want good relations with our neighbors. However, we do not discuss anything beyond the delimitation of the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Gerapetritis’ remarks to To Vima

This statement from Mitsotakis comes a day after Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis’ interview with To Vima. The Foreign Minister responded firmly to Ankara’s move to announce marine parks in the Aegean, explaining that Greece’s “calm waters” policy has benefited the country and stressing that Greece is “fully ready for any scenario.”

High prices at the center of the Cabinet meeting

Mitsotakis also addressed inflation during his remarks before the Cabinet meeting, calling it the biggest issue facing Greek households. He noted that prices for staple goods such as olive oil, fruit and vegetables have fallen this month compared to last, and reminded that starting September 1, the National Price Reduction Agreement takes effect, alongside market initiatives covering school supplies.

In his speech, Mitsotakis also touched on Greek-Turkish relations, stating that Greece wants good relations with its neighbor while sending a firm message on the spatial planning issue. He also spoke about the Recovery Fund, public debt and the Thessaloniki International Fair.
