Significant delays at ports worldwide, along with reduced routes and instances of disruption in the global supply chain last month negatively affected container traffic at all European terminals operated by Cosco Shipping Ports, which at the port of Piraeus manages two piers under its wholly owned subsidiary, Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) S.A.
In terms of September 2021, PCT reported the handling of 419,800 Teu, compared to 438,200 during the corresponding month of 2020, a reduction of 4.2 percent.
In terms of the first nine-month period of the year, the drop was less pronounced (-1 percent), or, in absolute terms, 3.660 million Teu, compared to 3.696 million Teu compared to the Jan-Sep 2020 period.
Nevertheless, PCT executives forecast that the current year will hover at 2020’s levels.
In calculating the figures from all 36 port terminals managed by Cosco Shipping Ports in China and overseas, total Teu handled in September 2021 reached 9.338 million, compared to 9.235 million 2020, an increase of 1.1 percent; up by 4.8 percent in the Jan-Sep period.
