Greece has up to 500,000 active covid cases says professor

Professor of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Demosthenes Sarigiannis, speaking to SKAI channel, estimated that the actual covid cases range from 400,000-500,000 adding that both intubations and deaths are up, something which he expects will continue.

“We are dealing with a virus that is present. It hasn’t changed that dramatically and it still pesters us. It sends people to hospitals and ICUs,” he said.

He also noted that the Omicron 5 variant affects the lower respiratory system, however, it can also cause more serious illness if someone has underlying diseases.

The professor opined that cases are twice as many as recorded, because the number of tests is also relatively low. Active cases are at 400,000-500,000. He particularly noted that “hard indicators”, deaths and intubations are on the increase, something expected to continue for a little while longer.
