Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) on Monday announced that national electricity demand was covered for a total of five straight hours last week solely through renewable energy sources, a first for the country.
According to figures released by the national power grid operator, production from RESs broke the previous record by reaching 3,106 MW, and between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 7, 2022.
IPTO pointed to greater benefits for consumers from a higher use of RESs, as the rate is 94 euros per MWh generated by wind parks; 190 euros per MWh for lignite-fired plants and a whopping 499 euros per MWh for gas-fired plants.
New wind parks coming online over the coming period are expected to reduce the rate to 58 euros per MWh.
