Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) and Hellenic Cables on Monday signed an agreement for a fourth phase to connect the Cyclades islands, in the central Aegean, with the mainland electricity grid.
The new contract foresees a 150kV connection, via undersea cables, between the Lavrio port site on the mainland and the islands of Serifos and Milos, a total distance of 170 kilometers.
The specific project will also upgrade the power connection to a total of seven Cyclades islands year-round, with the other five being Folegandros, Ios, Kimolos, Sifnos and Kythnos.
With the connection to the mainland grid, two diesel-fired power plants on Milos and Serifos will gradually be phased out.
The total installation project has a duration of 28 months.
