Main opposition SYRIZA party on Thursday endorsed its former Parliament deputy, Costas Zachariadis, for the mayor’s race in Athens, as local government elections will be held on Oct. 8.
Zachariadis received the nod via a decision by the leftist party’s political secretariat, after receiving more votes over former education minister Nikos Filis.
Zachariadis will face incumbent Costas Bakoyannis, who is backed by ruling New Democracy (ND) party, and is deemed as the front-runner in the race for Greece’s largest municipality.
