The Ukrainian low-cost carrier SkyUp Airlines is set to commence its first flights from Athens International Airport (AIA) next Monday, May 19. The new route will connect Athens with Chișinău, Moldova, with scheduled flights operating twice a week in both directions.
Founded in 2017, SkyUp Airlines has rapidly expanded its network across Europe. In April 2025, the airline launched a series of regular flights linking Chișinău with key European destinations, including major cities in France, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Sweden.
The Athens–Chișinău route marks a significant step forward for connectivity between Greece, Moldova, and Ukraine. According to the Director of Communications & Marketing at Athens International Airport, traffic from Moldova saw a remarkable 39% increase in 2024 compared to 2019, highlighting the growing demand for travel between the two regions.
Moldovan Ambassador Andrei Popov underscored the importance of SkyUp’s presence in the market, emphasizing the airline’s competitive low ticket prices.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Liashenko, Chargé d’Affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy, noted the symbolic importance of the new route. He stressed that despite the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian business continues to grow, standing firm in its principles, values, and commitment to democracy.
In addition to Athens, SkyUp Airlines has already launched flights to Heraklion, Crete, and plans to operate regular seasonal flights to Thessaloniki during the summer months, further expanding its footprint in the Greek market.
