PM Mitsotakis Outlines 25 Reforms at Cabinet Meeting, Avoids Mention of Farming Scandal

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis carefully avoided alluding to the ongoing farming scandal and the investigation proceedings underway during his address in a cabinet meeting on Friday, instead choosing to outline a series of reforms in the works expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“We will focus on 25 priorities, basic reforms, which will make up the core of our government plan from now until the end of the year,” he said in his opening statement to his ministers.

Mitsotakis mentioned the urgency of completing projects under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The Greek PM reiterated his plans for tax breaks, expected to be announced during his presence at the Thessaloniki Trade Fair in September, to support the middle class.

“The Finance Ministry is clearly preparing for announcements to be made at the Thessaloniki International Fair, including new relief measures and support for the middle class. However, it remains committed to the fight against tax evasion, emphasizing the use of new digital tools, Mitsotakis underlined.

Mitsotakis stressed that 2026 was critical in terms of the full absorption of the EU Recovery Fund. “You are well aware of the goals and the timetables, as well as the fact that the next twelve months will be absolutely crucial. Not a single euro should go unaccounted for,” he noted.

Some of the key government reforms and initiatives promised to be implemented over the next year include

  • Policies to boost Greek exports,
  • An overhaul of the structure of the Greek Armed Forces,
  • The launch of non-state, non-profit universities,
  • The upgrade of the police force’s technological infrastructure to safeguard borders and enhance public safety,
  • The reform of urban planning services,
  • The completion of the Land Registry (Cadastral Mapping) and digitization of property transfer and land-use procedures,
  • The establishment of a national wildfire risk assessment map and the tendering of public properties under social exchange schemes for affordable housing and social cohesion.
