Digital Work Card Set for Nationwide Rollout in Greece by 2026

Greece is preparing for the nationwide implementation of the digital work card in 2026, extending its use across both the private and public sectors. The move comes after early applications of the system demonstrated significant success, particularly in boosting the reporting of overtime hours.

The full launch of the new “Ergani II” information system on February 16 marks a major step toward a more digitized workplace. The platform promises to simplify hiring and departures, eliminate redundant paperwork, and give employees immediate access to their own work data.

Authorities also expect it to strengthen oversight of undeclared and underreported work, promoting transparency and fair labor practices.

By providing precise records of working hours and overtime payments, the system aims to enhance compliance and protect both workers and businesses from unfair competition. Official figures from the Ministry of Labor show that in sectors where the digital card has already been applied, reported overtime surged by 2.45 million hours in 2025—a 53% increase compared with 2024—boosting social security revenues by 800 million euros.

To date, the system has covered major economic sectors such as industry, retail, tourism, catering, wholesale trade, energy, and financial services—areas with high employee concentration and historically high risks of overtime and schedule violations.

The next expansion phase will target sectors characterized by seasonal or flexible employment, while private health, education, professions dominated by freelancers, and the primary sector (agriculture, livestock, fishing) remain outside the immediate scope.

By 2026, the digital work card is also expected to extend to public institutions, including ministries, local authorities, and public agencies, primarily to monitor working hours. Officials see this as a crucial step in modernizing labor oversight, curbing undeclared work, and ensuring fair treatment across Greece’s workforce.
