The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, representing Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was unable to participate due to the fires, took part earlier today, through a teleconference, in the 3rd International Conference of Heads of State and Government in support of the people of Lebanon in the wake of last year’s devastating explosion.
The Conference was co-chaired by the French President and the UN Under-Secretary-General.
In his speech, the Foreign Minister underlined the importance that our country attaches to the stability and development of the wider region, as well as the continuous support to the friendly people of Lebanon.
In this context, he pointed out that Greece will contribute to the strengthening of the Greek Orthodox hospital “Agios Georgios” in Beirut.
He stressed that a study will be prepared, from the Greek side, for the reconstruction of the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was severely damaged in last year’s explosion in the port of Beirut.
Mr. Dendias also underlined the importance that Greece attaches to the strengthening of the Theological School of Balamand University. In this context, he reiterated the expediency of reintegrating Greek, as the language of instruction, into the said university, a regime which was in force in the past.
It is recalled that Greece was the first country to respond to Lebanon’s call for aid, after the catastrophic explosion in the port of Beirut.
In this context, a team of the Greek Search and Rescue Team of EMAK, accompanied by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Costas Frangogiannis, had gone to Beirut the day after the explosion, which took place exactly one year ago.
