Maria Sakkari is having a dream season and achieving one success after another, while she is already considered the top Greek tennis player of all time.
The 26-year-old champion, thanks to her awesome year, achieved a new record, as she climbed to 7th place in the world rankings for the first time in her career, something that has never been done before by a Greek athlete.
Sakkari won the promotion to No. 7, despite the fact that she was excluded prematurely from Indian Wells, because the points from the Roland Garros of 2020 came through.
The Greek tennis player had finished the season in 2020 in 22nd place in the world and within a few months she jumped 15 places, while she remains in the top eight that assures her qualification to the WTA Finals (which will take place on November 10-17 in Guadalajara).
Sakkari has dropped to sixth place, but is a favorite to qualify for the tournament, in which Ashley Barty, Arina Sampalenka, Barbora Krejchikova and Karolina Pliskova have already passed.
