Greece’s state-owned but independently run hydrocarbons and energy resources management company (HEREMA S.A.) on Monday announced the successful completion of two-dimension seismic research in a sea region west and southwest of the large island of Crete.

The research was conducted by the Norway-based global geophysical firm PGS, on behalf of concessionaires ExxonMobil and Greek refinery concern Helleniq Energy.

The off-shore seismic research began in November 2022 and focused on search for possible natural gas deposits.

Data was collected for more than 12.200 square kilometers, significantly exceeding the 6,500 square kilometers foreseen in the contract as the minimum condition.

The specific mission was described as ground-breaking, given that significant data was collected for uncharted undersea tracts within Greece’s EEZ.
