Mrs. Elvira Domingo, of EIT Food, in the context of Beyond 2023, spoke with OT about the new challenges in the agricultural sector and the solutions offered by new technologies.
EIT Food is an innovation acceleration community in the agriculture and food sector that aims to bring new new products to market faster, according to Ms. Domingo. As she noted, there is cooperation with university institutions in Greece for the development of programs while there are also educational programs through which all interested parties come together.
According to Ms. Domingo, the Covid pandemic actually gave impetus to the agricultural and food sector to adopt new technologies more quickly, both by farmers and by startups in the field, while she emphasized that “now there are many online meetings and they are much more direct communication”.
For Greece, Ms. Domingo emphasized that there is a need to develop sustainable agriculture, improve water management and transition to sustainable farming methods and techniques. “Even in food processing and processing there is a perspective for innovation and development,” he added.
Asshe said “everything is a challenge and we have to turn it into an opportunity”.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, he said that despite the difficulties the resilience of the sector was proven, with farmers continuing to produce their products. Nevertheless, he emphasized the need for more organic products and better production management.
For the future of food, she said that food should be developed to meet the needs of future generations, there should be transparency in production but also food safety, especially after the war in Ukraine.
