Woman arrested on charges of spreading false news; claimed scores of flood victims in specific Thessaly town

A 35-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday evening in northwest on charges of spreading false news, after posting video on her Instagram account claiming that scores of people had died – and were unreported – in a flood-ravaged town in the Thessaly plain.

The claim was officially disputed by the fire brigade and crisis management officials.

Record-breaking rainfall pounded central Greece last week, submerging large parts of the Thessaly plain below floodwaters.

Police in the city of Ioannina took the woman into custody in cooperation with the electronic crimes unit.

She was subsequently arraigned and freed pending further legal action.
