Citizens throughout Greece can now complete the process for the digital issuance of a driver’s license for private vehicles via the gov.gr platform, starting today, May 14. This service, which has been developed by the Ministries of Digital Governance and Infrastructure and Transport, aims to facilitate citizens and driving schools, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance transparency in these procedures.
From Pilot to Nationwide Implementation
Initially, the digital service operated as a pilot program in the Region of Crete. During the two-month period of March to April, 478 licenses were issued through the platform, showcasing the efficiency and value of the digital process.
With the expansion to all 13 regions, thousands of citizens and driving schools are expected to benefit, saving time and effort. In 2024 alone, over 160,000 applications for the initial issuance of a driver’s license were submitted across Greece.
Step-by-Step Process
To access the service, citizens can visit the gov.gr portal under the “Citizen and Everyday Life” section, then select “Transportation.” Alternatively, they can go directly to drivers-vehicles.services.gov.gr and log in using their TaxisNet credentials.
The process includes filling in the required information, issuing and paying the necessary fees, and completing the mandatory medical examinations. The platform also allows users to issue a candidate driver’s training certificate, schedule theoretical and practical exams, and apply for a new driver’s license. At each stage, users receive notifications via email and SMS.
To further simplify the procedure, citizens can also authorize driving schools electronically to handle the entire license issuance process on their behalf.
Three New Digital Services on gov.gr
In addition to the driver’s license issuance, three new digital services have been made available today on gov.gr, designed to streamline vehicle ownership and driver needs. These include:
1. Changing ownership details of private passenger or motorcycle vehicles.
2. Changing the color of private passenger or motorcycle vehicles, including the issuance and payment of the necessary license fee.
3. Transferring a numbered private passenger or motorcycle vehicle due to inheritance.
