Top Greek wrestler Georgios Kougioumtsidis and his coach Themis Iakovidis were received at the Hellenic Olympic Committee’s (HOC) headquarters in Athens on Wednesday by the organization’s president, Isidoros Kouvelos, days after the former won the medal in the 79 kg event at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb.
The champion wrestler and his coach received congratulations by HOC officials, while it was also announced that Evangelos Marinakis, a major backer of the HOC, will help sponsor Kougioumtsidis until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Kouvelos had invited Kougioumtsidis, who was also accompanied by by the general secretary of Greece’s wrestling federation, Olympic medalist and HOC member Kostas Thanos, as well as deputy president Dimitris Trambakoulas, to congratulate him on his gold medal success at the world championships.

“You brought us great joy and happiness with the first gold medal (by a Greek athlete) in wrestling at a World Championships. I want to congratulate you and ask you to keep working with the same passion and strength, as we have our major goal ahead of us, which is the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. We, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, will be there for you, but also for the wrestling federation. Keep up your training and competition and don’t worry about anything. I am sure that at the Olympic Games you will raise the Greek flag high and represent all of Greece,” Kouvelos told the young champion, before adding:
“I spoke with Mr. Vangelis Marinakis, who is a great supporter of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, and who was very pleased with your success. He asked me to tell you that he wants to support you until the Olympic Games in Los Angeles through his company, Alter Ego Media. He would like to be here with you, but he’s abroad and asked me to convey his intention to you, because he loves sports and he was moved by your gold medal,” Kouvelos said.
On his part, Kougioumtsidis responded: “Thank you very much for the warm welcome. You have shown from the very beginning that you are on the side of athletes, and we sincerely thank you for your support. I hope this is just the beginning and that other wrestlers will win gold medals. I hope we can celebrate together in Los Angeles.”
