EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson on Thursday toured the major LNG terminal on the islet of Revythoussa, which lies just off the port of Piraeus in the greater Athens area, a facility whose importance has been significantly boosted in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Simson was accompanied by Greek Energy Minister Costas Skrekas and a coterie of ministry and natgas utility officials.
The Greek side briefed the EU Commissioner and her delegation of measures taken by Greece to guarantee energy security and to support society from the repercussions of the current crisis. Athens also presented its blueprint for diversifying energy supplies and energy corridors via the massive REPowerEU recovery plan.

In terms of immediate solutions, Skrekas said storage capacity will be expanded at Revythoussa, while another floating tank will be added three already in place – all a contingency against a sudden interruption in the supply of Russian natural gas.

On her part, Simson reminded that the Union now faces a “triple challenge”, namely, to ensure safe, viable and economically accessible energy amid a worsening market situation.

“It’s worth recognizing Greece’s efforts to ensure a fair transition, while at the same time making parallel significant market reforms, and accelerating needed investments,” she said.
