An order for the immediate removal of seven police officers from their positions, for the serious case of the bloody incidents with one dead, caused by Dinamo Zagreb hooligans in New Philadelphia, was given by the Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Economou.
In his statement, the minister characterized as impermissible and unacceptable the fact of the Croatian hooligans crossing the Greek border and their journey to Athens, he noted that the authorities’ prevention failed and he stressed that the removals and transfers of officers will not stop here. For this he instructed the leader of ELAS to proceed quickly with the internal investigation and to assign responsibilities “at every level and in any form”.
The investigation will be handed over today by the chief to a senior officer.
Mr. Economou expressed his condolences for the unjust death of the 29-year-old AEK fan, made a harsh self-criticism for the fact that so far we have not succeeded in defeating fan violence and assured that there is the political will to properly deal with this phenomenon.
