Τhe Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay for advancing peace and international law.

The committee praised her judicial rigor, personal integrity and remarkable courage. At a critical moment for global security, it stressed that the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully, without resorting to force, depends directly on respect for the international rule of law. It added that a stable international legal framework, in which those responsible for grave crimes are held accountable and victims obtain justice, remains the essential precondition for a peaceful world.

Born in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Indian Tamil descent, Pillay faced discrimination from an early age. After studying law, she opened her own practice in 1967 and vigorously defended activists fighting apartheid. She later studied at Harvard University, earning a doctorate in juridical science (S.J.D.) in 1988.

In 1995 she was appointed to South Africa’s Supreme Court. In 1999 she became a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), where she left a lasting mark by helping establish the legal principle that sexual violence, rape and the spread of propaganda can constitute crimes against humanity and genocide.

She went on to serve at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and, from 2008 to 2014, as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her standing is also reflected in more recent assignments. In 2019 she was appointed an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in the case accusing Myanmar of genocide, and from 2021 to 2025 she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Established in the early 20th century, the Nobel Peace Prize ranks among the world’s most prestigious honors. Past laureates include former U.S. President Barack Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Nelson Mandela.
