The president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Constantinos Michalos, passed away on Friday as a result of a heart attack and after being transported from the plant where he was president and CEO since 1988.

He died at a nearby hospital.

Michalos, 61, was first elected as a board member of ACCI in 1993 and had served in several positions at the specific chamber, the largest regional such body, for many years.

His company, Swan S.A., is located at the Kryoneri settlement, north of Athens proper, which on Friday was encircled by a wildfire. Michalos was there since early in the morning to oversee efforts at keeping the flames at bay, given that propane and other flammable materials are located on the premises.

Michalos was born in 1960. He completed undergraduate and graduate studies in finance and financial applications in the UK. ,

At the time of his death, he was also the president of the Central Union of Greek Chambers of Commerce. 

He is survived by his wife and four children.
