Two records were broken in the electricity system in the month of May.
As can be seen from the monthly energy report issued by Independent Power Transmission Operator-ADMIE, last month was the 12th consecutive month in which a drop in overall demand was recorded.
Also, in May RES and hydroelectric plants participated with 64.66% in the total electricity generation.
Total demand
In May, the total demand for electricity, according to the data of ADMIE, once again recorded a negative change.
In fact, it was reduced by -7.01% compared to the corresponding month last year.
The biggest cuts (-7.20%) were registered by energy-intensive industries.
In the distribution network, the total electricity demand from medium and low voltage households and businesses fell by -6.90%.
May was the 12th consecutive month of negative change in electricity consumption. A fact that is attributed to the effort of small and large consumers to limit electricity costs that were triggered by the price increases in electricity.
The mild winter also contributed to the downward trend in demand, as a result of which domestic consumers drastically reduced the use of heating devices
Total electricity demand last month closed at 3,610 GWh (Gigawatt hours).
Renewables
Another record was broken by RES.
In May, according to ADMIE’s monthly energy report, wind and photovoltaic systems contributed more Gigawatt hours to electricity generation than ever before.
Their percentage of participation in the energy mix amounted to 57.56%. If hydroelectric plants (7.10%) are included, then the total participation of clean technologies amounts to 64.66%.
In May, thermal units (natural gas and lignite) accounted for 35.33% of total electricity production.
The total electricity generation moved downward (-6.18%) compared to the corresponding month last year, closing at 3,041 GWh.
The balance of interconnections (imports – exports of current) was for another month introductory. More specifically, the net balance was at 644 GWh (Gigawatt hours).
