In view of the August holiday season, the Athens Medical Association (AMA) issued advice for healthy and accident-free travels including tips on how to remain safe in the sun, on the beach, dietary tips, as well as what a first aid kit should include.
“Changes in our environment during the holidays can pose risks, especially for vulnerable groups of the population such as the elderly, children and the chronically ill,” said AMA President Giorgos Patoulis.
Among others, travelers should avoid drinking tap water and avoid ice. Instead bottled water is recommended. Additionally, special attention should be given to food items especially in hot weather conditions.
Due to the high temperatures in August, holidaymakers are advised to drink plenty of fluids and avoid exposure to the sun between noon and 4 p.m. Vacationers should also make sure to wear sunscreen on the beach and when hiking and a hat. Using insect repellent containing DEET is advised. For campers, give clothes and shoes a good shake before wearing.
Travelers should continue to practice hygiene and wash hands with soap as a new wave of COVID-19 is sending more people to the hospital.
It is also advised to bring along a first aid kit which includes bandages, non-adhesive dressings, antiseptic solution, anti-inflammatory tablets, antacids, antidiarrheals, food poisoning tablets, antihistamine tablets, cortisone ointment, skin burn ointment, anti-nausea tablets, and powdered electrolytes.
Make sure to jot down emergency numbers of the local police, health center and pharmacy.
