The weather in Greece is expected to take a turn for the worse starting Sunday. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency bulletin forecasting severe weather, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, a notable drop in temperatures, and snowfall in mountainous regions.
Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms
The adverse weather is expected to commence on Sunday afternoon in northern regions, particularly Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, extending to the northeastern Aegean islands by evening. These areas are likely to experience intense rain and thunderstorms. On Monday, April 7, the severe conditions are projected to spread to Eastern Thessaly, the Sporades islands, northern Evia, and parts of the Eastern Aegean.
Snowfall in Elevated Areas
From Sunday night into Monday, substantial snowfall is anticipated in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Macedonia and Thrace, affecting elevations as low as 400 meters. Additionally, the highlands of Epirus and Thessaly may witness significant snow accumulation during Monday morning.
Temperature Drop and Frost
A sharp decline in temperatures will begin Sunday afternoon in Macedonia and Thrace, progressively affecting central and southern Greece through Monday and Tuesday. This cooling trend may result in frost during nighttime and early morning hours, particularly in northern regions.
Preparedness and Safety Measures
Residents and visitors in the affected areas are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and adhere to guidance from authorities. The EMY emphasizes the importance of caution during these severe weather conditions and recommends limiting unnecessary travel, securing outdoor items, and ensuring that drainage systems are clear to prevent flooding.
