The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has appointed Thanos Plevris as the new Minister for Migration and Asylum, following the resignation of Makis Voridis on Friday, June 27, in the wake of the scandal engulfing Greece’s agricultural subsidy organization OPEKEPE. The decision was made while the prime minister was in Chania, Crete, for the weekend.
The former Migration Minister Voridis had handed in his resignation, along with four deputy ministers, amid a widening probe into the fraudulent disbursement of EU agricultural funds.
Plevris’s return to the cabinet signals a shift toward a more right-leaning political stance by Athens, at a time when the government is facing mounting political pressure and internal instability.
Alongside this appointment, several other changes were announced by government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis.
Harry Theoharis has been named Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Andrianos takes over as Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, and Christos Dermentzopoulos assumes the role of Deputy Minister of Digital Governance.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new minister and deputy ministers will take place on Monday, June 30, at 10:00 a.m. before the President of the Republic, Konstas Tasoulas.
Later at 12:00 p.m., the Cabinet will convene at the Maximos Mansion under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
