Greece to Tighten Controls as Sheep Pox Outbreak Spreads

The Greek government has announced stricter measures to contain the ongoing sheep pox outbreak, following a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. The meeting brought together key ministers, regional authorities, and agricultural officials to coordinate the national response and ensure full enforcement of health protocols.

The officials reviewed recent data on the spread of the disease, which has intensified over the past month, and agreed to strengthen daily cooperation between the Veterinary Services, the Hellenic Police, and regional agricultural departments.

Increased Patrols and Stricter Enforcement
Authorities will now conduct more frequent patrols and checkpoints, particularly in regions where the disease has seen a resurgence. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food will work closely with the Ministry of Citizen Protection and regional authorities to enforce all measures under the guidance of Minister Kostas Tsiaras and Deputy Minister Christos Kellas.

Special attention will be given to investigating:

Reports of unreported infections,
Illegal slaughter and improper disposal of carcasses, which may aid disease transmission, and
Unauthorized animal transport, especially during evening and night hours within and beyond surveillance zones.
Violators will face severe penalties in accordance with national and EU legislation.

EU-Aligned Measures and Farmer Support
The containment plan is aligned with EU Regulation 687/2020, which mandates strict adherence to biosecurity and animal health protocols.

Officials reaffirmed that the government remains fully committed to protecting Greece’s livestock sector and minimizing animal losses.

Financial support is also being accelerated:

The second round of compensation for animals culled since April is set to begin shortly, with necessary funds already secured.
Payments to livestock producers for feed purchases during quarantine periods are also expected to start immediately.
A Coordinated National Effort
The government emphasized that only through rigorous enforcement and coordinated action among all relevant agencies can the outbreak be contained effectively. As the situation evolves, authorities aim to combine strict control with economic relief for affected farmers to safeguard both animal health and rural livelihoods.
