Greek Hazelnut Brioche Recalled Over Safety Concerns

Greek Hazelnut Brioche Recalled Over Safety Concerns

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has issued a recall for a popular Greek pastry, “Tsoureki with Hazelnut Praline – Small Mountain Farms”, produced for MARKET IN. The affected batch carries Lot 066A1 and a best-before date of May 21, 2025, with a net weight of 480g.

Reason for Recall
Laboratory tests revealed that the product contains coumarin above legally permitted levels. While coumarin is a naturally occurring compound, it has been associated with potential liver toxicity and carcinogenic effects, prompting EFET to classify the batch as unsafe for consumption.

Official Statement from EFET
EFET’s Regional Directorate of Western Greece confirmed the recall following routine food safety monitoring under the Official Control Program for Additives and Aromatic Substances. The product was examined by the First Chemical Service of Athens at the General State Laboratory of Greece, which identified excessive coumarin levels exceeding legal limits for this food category.

EFET has demanded immediate withdrawal of the affected batch, and authorities are conducting ongoing checks to ensure compliance.
