Representatives of three professional organizations active in the greater Piraeus area’s shipbuilding and ship-repair industry on Tuesday again referred to an incomprehensible and even illegal behavior on the part of the Cosco-managed Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), the biggest and busiest port facility in Greece and one of the biggest, by volume, in the EU.
The charges were aired during an online briefing by representatives of the Association of Shipbuilding/Repair (SENABI), the Association of Shipbuilding/Repair Owners of Perama (SINP) and the Union of Manufacturer/Contractors/Engineers of Piraeus (ENOMIXPE), where they detailed the problems faced by the sector in working within the PPA.
Specifically, private contractors and professionals charged that Cosco-PPA is engaging in abusive charges and violation of the 2016 concession agreement. The sector reps also pointed to major omissions in the maintenance of infrastructure at the ship repair sites within the PPA, along with cursory measures public health measures against the Covid-19 virus for workers.
The briefing was also viewed by practically all of the Parliament deputies elected from the greater Piraeus area, as well as municipal office-holders.
