Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday announced that the national statutory minimum wage will exceed 950 euros before the next general elections, as he outlined the economic agenda he plans to present at next week’s Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
Speaking to residents in the western Macedonia city of Kozani, Mitsotakis said he was confident his government would surpass the 950-euro target, which was set in the New Democracy (ND) party’s 2023 election program.
The minimum wage currently stands at 920 euros, after being increased last April. Mitsotakis has previously said the center-right government expects to reach 950 euros by 2027, but his latest statement indicates that the wage will rise beyond that level before the next election.
The prime minister also said he will use his address at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair on Sept. 5 to present the government’s economic plan for 2027 and its broader policy roadmap through 2030.
Mitsotakis also stepped up his criticism of opposition parties, portraying New Democracy as the only political force capable of providing stability and economic progress.
He said opposition parties were primarily united by their desire to remove New Democracy and himself from office rather than by a coherent alternative governing plan. He argued that voters would recognize his government’s ability to steer Greece through difficult geopolitical conditions and improve living standards.
On economic policy, Mitsotakis said stronger economic performance was necessary to provide meaningful support to households.
He argued that the government must first create wealth and strengthen the economy before it can distribute the benefits more broadly, with the aim of ensuring that economic prosperity reaches households throughout the country.
Mitsotakis’ remarks come one week before his keynote speech at the 90th TIF, which runs from Sept. 5-13. The annual trade exhibition serves as a policy platform for the Greek government in power at the time, with Mitsotakis preparing to present measures for the coming year alongside a broader roadmap extending to 2030.
