The head of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen, and Merchants (GSEVEE), which represents most of Greece’s SME owners, on Wednesday called for “targeted financing” of businesses in sectors starved of liquidity, along with a subsidization of social security contributions to retain and increase employment in the post-Covid period.
GSEVEE president Giorgos Kavvathas spoke during virtual conference organized by main opposition SYRIZA party, on the subject of restarting the tourism sector with public health safety and support for the sector and its employees.
Former prime minister and SYRIZA president Alexis Tsipras was one of the participants.
Kavvathas also called for an EU-wide plan to reduce the now stratospheric level of private debt, which is particularly high in Greece, and especially the portion created during the pandemic.
At current levels, he said, businesses and households have acquired non-sustainable debt loads over the past year.
