Fear that the relaxation of the summer, regarding the protection measures against the coronavirus, we will pay for it in the autumn and the winter, was the opinion of medical researcher George Pavlakis from the USA. Mr Pavakis is warning about the rapid spread of the Delta mutation and emphasizing that it is a lockdown is the only solution.
“The Delta mutation has come with a machine gun and we go on vacation with water pistols, carefree”, he noted characteristically, referring to the relaxation of the measures, especially during the summer period.
“For a few tourist euros, we risk having many people in ICUs that cost a lot, while we risk having very big chronic disease problems in our society in the long run. This will have a huge cost,” he said and stressed that the Delta mutation is no joke, while the only way to deal with it is a lockdown. “It cannot be fought with anything other than stopping human contact,” he said characteristically.
“We will pay for the relaxation”
Speaking to Sky television, the scientist noted, among other things, that today, along with all the fires, will be the day we reach the landmark of the 13,000 dead from coronavirus and added: “Unfortunately, the 4th wave is spreading without serious resistance due to the relaxation during the summer. We have 10-13 dead a day and it is not normal at all.”
He pointed out that the relaxation-euphoria of summer will be paid for in autumn and winter.
“The CDC has begun to understand that as the situation is shaping up we are heading for a big Delta mutation wave especially when people start returning from the relaxation of summer, but as we see in the Greek islands the wave is here even in summer and I am afraid to think of what can happen in the fall with schools, jobs, and mass transit open. Without vaccinations, distances, and diligently worn masks, unfortunately I do not think that schools can be kept open and things can go well. If the measures are kept now and the coronation is reduced in the summer, the job for winter will be easier,” he said characteristically.
Further increase of cases in the following days
Regarding the cases of covid-19 in our country, he said that due to the relaxation of the measures observed in the summer, he estimates that on August 15 or in the following weeks there will be an additional outbreak of cases. “The problem is that even today with 3500 cases the positivity of 3 and something shows that there are still many cases that escape and in the holiday places the situation has reached the red while yesterday the CDC put Greece at the highest risk and gave recommendations to Americans not to travel to our country. So unfortunately I think that our tourist product is in danger and that the period from August 15 onwards will be very dangerous and many people want to sound whatever alarms are still left.”
Asked if some areas needed to be closed, he replied that restrictions should have been made at the beginning of the wave as it would be 100 times easier and more efficient than it being done at the peak of the wave. “The wave has flatlined at about 3,000 cases for a long time and intubation and deaths have begun. In the coming weeks, especially after August 15, the situation in hospitals may become explosive again because the epidemic will spread from the young to the elderly and spread to the rest of society – because half are unvaccinated – and it may go much faster than last year.
Concerning fires and climate change
Referring to the fires recorded in Greece, he stressed that all these “plagues” we see today are the result of the careless and thoughtless destruction we are commiting on the planet and this brings environmental disasters like the increase in temperature, fires, and ecological disasters are the cause of epidemics because they change the resulting ecosystem animals that were not animals and viruses that were in small areas of the planet have the opportunity to expand.
He pointed out that we need to think seriously about the future of our planet because we have progressed so much that we can do great disaster so we need to think much longer.
Mr. Pavlakis also referred to a new term that environmentalists know as “WHI” (Wildland Urban Interface) used in America and is the border of settlements and nature. “It simply came to our notice then. It is a disaster. The city is entering the forest more and more, with the result that a fire is causing a huge financial disaster, while if it were a fire on a deserted mountain, things would be completely different.”
He noted that we will see many disturbances in the urban web. “I hope we do not continue to have human casualties,” he said.
