The trend towards online shopping appears here to stay in Greece, as it was significantly boosted during various pandemic-related “lockdowns” over the past year and a half, but persisted afterwards, according to figures released by the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology & Communications (SEPE).
Nevertheless, the figures for online shopping in Greece still trail more “mature” markets of western and northern Europe, where online purchases now comprise the vast majority.
Specifically, according to SEPE, 50 percent of Internet users in Greece have recorded at least one purchase in the past 15 days, the same percentage as in June 2021.
The same figure is much lower than in December 2012, where it reached 61 percent, but higher than in pre-Covid December 2019, when the figure was only 26 percent.
By extrapolation, this means six out of 10 users in the country. In other west and northern European markets, the ratio is roughly eight out of 10 users.
