The commencement of direct flights between the United States and Greece, as early as March 7, comprises a “vote of confidence” for the east Mediterranean country and its tourism sector, relevant minister Vassilis Kikilias said on Monday, during a meeting with outgoing US ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt.

Kikilias, previously the health minister, also referred to a very significant market (the United States), with flows that create an added value for Greek tourism.

The biggest news from the meeting is the fact that US carriers will field 14 direct flights connecting the two countries from eight US airports during the peak summer season.

More US holiday-makers are expected given that fully vaccinated individuals flying from the US will not be obliged to show a negative Covid-19 test for entry into Greece.

Kikilias also referred to increased bookings, compared to the banner year of 2019, by US tourists eyeing a Greek holiday.
