The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has officially invited Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to address a joint meeting of Congress (US Senate, House of Representatives) on May 17, government sources in Athens first announced on Thursday.

The address is scheduled for 11:00 (EST) and will take place a day after the Greek leader’s scheduled meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House.

Mitsotakis is reportedly the first Greek prime minister to address the US Congress, sources noted, while an invitation for such a address is granted to foreign leaders in very exceptional cases.

In her invitation, the influential House Speaker notes, “…As our world faces a pivotal moment in the fight between the forces of democracy and autocracy, the transatlantic alliance remains vital to the future of freedom in the world.  The Congress and our Country look forward to hearing your message of democratic values as we continue to strengthen our partnership, bolster security and freedom worldwide, and build a brighter future for our children.”
