The latest Greek product to make it onto an international “bucket list” for top-quality foodstuffs is the country’s sheep’s milk cheese, with 17 varieties cited, including the graviera made on Crete in second place.
The 17 Greek entries on the “Top 50 list” unveiled by the TasteAtlas online travel guide to traditional foods and recipes, are the most from any one country in the cheeses category.
Graviera is the Greek version of the Swiss gruyère, and is generally considered the second most popular cheese made in the country after feta.
In something of a surprise result, the top sheep’s milk cheese picked by the site’s editors isn’t from a Mediterranean country—it’s the Queijo Serra da Estrela produced in the mountainous region of Serra da Estrela in Portugal.
