Fuel prices in Greece remain persistently high, with gasoline holding above €2 per liter nationwide, putting increasing pressure on households and businesses and prompting the government to consider extending support measures.
According to the latest data, the average price of unleaded gasoline stands at €2.029 per liter, while premium fuel reaches €2.25. Diesel is priced at €1.96 per liter, and LPG at €1.342, keeping transportation costs elevated across the country.
Drivers and businesses feel the strain
As prices remain high, many drivers are actively searching for discounts and cheaper fuel options to manage their expenses. The impact is even more severe for professionals who rely on daily vehicle use.
“Costs have increased by around 20%,” one driver said, reflecting the growing financial burden.
Government subsidies introduced in the past, such as the “Fuel Pass” subsidy, have offered only short-term relief, with many recipients saying the support was quickly depleted.
“It should have been €100 or €150,” another driver noted, highlighting concerns that previous measures were insufficient.
Government weighs next steps
The government is now planning to extend the diesel subsidy through May, with the possibility of continuing support measures into the summer if conditions do not improve.
Officials are also preparing a broader package of permanent or semi-permanent measures, expected to be announced in September at the annual economic policy event in Thessaloniki.
While reducing fuel taxes remains under discussion, it is currently considered unlikely.
