The mandatory use of higher protection masks by mass transit commuters, supermarket consumers and by employees in food-and beverage establishments was announced by the Greek government on Monday, and taking effect from Jan. 3 to Jan. 16, as part of stepped up measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus, especially in the wake of a mushrooming number of Omicron variant cases across Europe.
The relevant health minister said the measures come after recommendations by a committee of public health experts and epidemiologists, who convened today to focus on the more contagious Omicron variant. Stricter ones may apply if these are not effective
The government also recommends the use of FFP2 or KN95 masks in the aforementioned sectors.
Additionally, only seated customers will be allowed in bars and clubs, while music will continue to be allowed. A maximum of six people per table will be allowed.
Only 10 percent of a sports venue’s capacity will be allowed, although a maximum of 1,000 spectators is also foreseen.
Stricter protocols for visits to elderly homes were also announced, along with a 50-percent minimum number of public and private sector staff working online.
