Finding solutions for carbon-free shipping, with the proposal to impose a carbon charge on every ship, is the subject of a major international conference entitled “Shaping the Future of Shipping”, which will take place on Saturday, November 6 in Glasgow.
The international conference seeks to document solutions and ways of cooperation between governments and the shipping industry with the aim of creating zero-emission ships, accelerating investment in this direction and, above all, ensuring a fair transition to the new “green” shipping.
Topics to be discussed at the conference will include:
-challenges and commitments for carbon sequestration,
– research and development (R&D) measures based on the market and the context of a global policy,
-reduction of political and economic risk,
– ensuring a fair transition.
The global shipping industry has already called on the UN to speed up the timetable and set 2050 as the year for shipping to be completely free of carbon emissions. The International Maritime Chamber (ICS) has also supported the creation of a $ 5 billion R&D fund to ensure that zero-carbon seagoing vessels will be in the water by 2030. The shipping industry also supports a proposal for enforcement of a coal tariff on ships over 5,000 tons through a mechanism based on the world market.
The meeting, held as part of the COP26 International Climate Conference, will host leaders from the world’s largest shipping companies and government representatives of major shipping states as well as heads of major energy companies.
