Amazon Web Services (AWS) inaugurated its Athens office on Friday, an event that was also attended by Greece’s relevant development and investments minister, as well as the outgoing US ambassador to Athens.

In a more-or-less send-off address, Greek minister Adonis Georgiadis paid tribute to US envoy Geoffrey Pyatt, referring to the latter’s decisive presence in Greece over the past seven years.

The prolific career US diplomat has been credited by much of the local press and foreign policy pundits in Athens with shepherding Greek-American relations to their highest level in decades, while also serving as a prominent booster for US investments to the east Mediterranean country.

AWS currents fields 45 employees in Athens and touts an ambitious regional plan for its office, a location where just two years ago it had no presence.

AWS’s Europe Public Sector GM Cameroon Brooks was also on hand for the event.
