A working meeting was held at the Thessaloniki Port Authority by the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, in the context of the 86th Thessaloniki International Fair, with the subject of the upward trend of the cruise industry and the next steps in order for the city to highlight its tourism product even more.
The wager of cruise tourism
The Minister of Tourism stated: “In September 2021, a few days after I assumed the Ministry of Tourism, the first trip I made was here, in Thessaloniki. Then, I placed the Cruise bet as our strategic choice. With the hard and coordinated work of all agencies, and with the guidance of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the city’s port was upgraded and increased cruise ship arrivals tenfold compared to 2019. Half of them are homeporting activities, which provides greater added value” .
As he said, “this means an increase in the tourist product and a strengthening of the local economy. As a culmination of this effort, the 2023 Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum-PTSF will be held in Thessaloniki, which deserves to have high performance in sea tourism. It is particularly encouraging that the first signals show that in 2023 we will have an even greater increase in cruise ship arrivals. Congratulations to the Port Authority and all those who contributed and are contributing to this success.”
Added value for the city
For his part, Athanasios Liagos, Chairman of the Board of Directors. and CEO of the Thessaloniki Port Authority-OLTH, said: “At OLTH we aspire to operate as a growth portal, creating added value for the city, economy and society. The results from cruises justify our efforts for the substantial and visible stimulation of tourist flows in the city. We are therefore looking forward to hosting PSTF 2023 and welcoming to our city some of the world’s most important and influential representatives of the international cruise and marine tourism industry.”
“Our decision to move the 7th edition of the PSTF to Thessaloniki was an easy one, as the city is rapidly developing into a seasonal hub for the North Aegean, with the ambition to become an important homeport for an extended season and for all cruise lines that choose to be based in Greece”, noted Theodoros Vokos, Managing Director of Posidonia Exhibitions S.A. and recently elected President of the newly established Association of Organizers and Producers of Exhibitions of Greece (SOKEE).
The 7th Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum (PSTF) will take place in April 2023, for the first time outside of Athens, at a time when Greece’s second largest port is emerging as an important homeporting hub for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, thanks to significant investments, in the upgrading of maritime and aviation infrastructures and in the great increase of the tourism product.
