The works to upgrade the infrastructure in the shipbuilding repair zone of Perama, specifically on the Eastern side of Jetty II, have been completed, as announced by PPA SA.
The specific works are part of the second phase of the wider infrastructure improvement project in the Perama Shipyard and included the complete replacement of the platform.
In fact, the first ship, which docked at the brand new pier and had the first opportunity to test the new upgraded services, received a warm welcome from the competent department of PPA SA.
Work in progress on other piers
However, it is pointed out that work is underway on parts of the West side of Pier II and the East side of Pier I, in order to install two new Jib Cranes there at the beginning of 2023, which will be delivered to PPA SA.
The works on the floating tank of Piraeus I
In addition, during the 2nd half of 2022, the maintenance work on the floating drydock of Piraeus I was started and finished. The scope of the project included, among other things, the replacement of up to 400 tons of steel plates & spars, high-pressure water jetting & anti-rust paint in interiors and exteriors , as well as in the maintenance and repair of pumps, valves and piping systems.
Throughout the repair work and inspections of the project, the average number of skilled labor reached 150 per day, while increasing the need to procure a large volume of raw materials and implement related supporting works. As a result, employment opportunities, as well as increased income resources for workers and professionals in the sector from the wider region, were significantly enhanced in the past period.

All projects
The systematic upgrading projects and the targeted investments in the Perama shipbuilding and repair zone started in 2016 by the COSCO SHIPPING Group contributed to the strengthening of the Shipbuilding industry in our country. All relevant performance indicators are improving year after year, alongside the latest technology solutions, expanded dynamics in capacity and the highest safety standards provided.
It is worth noting that in 2016 only 69 ships were docked in PPA floating tanks, while in the year 2022 it is expected to reach around 150 ships. Working days at the tanks have similarly increased from 435 in 2016 to 1306 in 2022.
The president of PPA S.A., Mr. Yu Zenggang said characteristically “The goal of PPA S.A. is the provision of upgraded services for the repair and maintenance of ships, which will be accessible to all companies operating in the field. But the most important fact of all is that the NEZ is now a hub for the creation of new jobs, with a positive effect on the local economy. All the related projects foreseen under the €55m mandatory investments are progressing smoothly, according to schedule and giving a strong boost to the local shipbuilding industry towards the development of Piraeus port into a major regional ship repair hub”.
