Layoffs in Greece were virtually on par with recruitment rates for the month of September, according to data from the employment system ERGANI.
The data is expected as the country’s tourist season ended, resulting in an upswing in the number of employees departing as thousands of seasonal workers are left out of the job market.
ERGANI’s September 2024 data highlighted a net rise in private-sector employment with a positive balance of 3,596 jobs. Recruitments reached 346,700, while layoffs in Greece totaled 343,104. Of these departures, 132,962 were voluntary, while 210,142 were due to contract terminations or expirations.
Comparing September 2024 to the same month in 2023 reveals a decline of 27,718 fewer jobs this year, with a positive balance of 3,596 versus 31,314 last year. From January to September 2024, total hirings amounted to 2,574,577, while departures were 2,271,833, including 1,374,777 due to contract terminations and 897,056 voluntary exits.
The data also indicates a shift in the workforce toward flexible employment in September. Out of 346,700 hires, only 164,977 (47.58%) were full-time positions. Part-time contracts made up 152,991 (44.13%) of the hires, with 28,732 (8.29%) set as rotational work. This means flexible work agreements accounted for 52.42% of the contracts signed in September.
These employment flow balances, documented in ERGANI, also include cumulative employment data from January to September for each year from 2001 to 2024, alongside supplementary data from the Greek Public Employment Service for periods before ERGANI’s implementation.
