Greek Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias has traveled to Japan for a series of meetings with senior Japanese government officials aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in shipping, port infrastructure, shipbuilding and maritime security.

The visit marks the first time a Greek shipping minister has traveled to Japan in 13 years, highlighting efforts to expand a longstanding partnership between the two countries.

Longstanding ties in shipping and shipbuilding

Greece and Japan have maintained strong maritime ties for decades, with significant economic and commercial links between Greece’s ocean-going shipping industry and Japan’s shipbuilding sector.

Greek shipowners consistently rank second in orders for new vessels from Japanese shipyards, while 24% of the Greek-owned merchant fleet was built in Japan, reflecting the depth of the relationship and the potential for further cooperation and investment.

Beyond their commercial ties, the two countries share a commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the protection of freedom of navigation. These principles are particularly important to both countries because of their significant roles in international shipping and maritime trade.

Expanding cooperation in new areas

The two governments are seeking to broaden cooperation in areas of shared interest, building on their traditional maritime relationship while addressing the evolving needs of the global shipping industry.

Recent contacts and discussions have taken place in Athens. Japan also served as the honored country at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, held in September.

During the fair, Kikilias met with Japanese Minister of State for Economic Security and Economic Strategy Minoru Kiuchi to discuss opportunities to further develop economic and maritime relations between the two countries.

The minister’s visit to Japan is expected to continue these efforts through meetings with senior government officials.
