The fire front in Stamata, Attica, is still raging with Fire Brigade forces being reinforced.
At the moment, 66 firefighters are operating in the area with 3 groups of fire fighters on foot and 22 vehicles, 5 helicopters and 4 aircraft.
Water supply local authorities and volunteer firefighters are assisting in their effort.
It is noted that the operation is coordinated by the head of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouris, while a unit of the Arson Crimes Directorate is going to the area to investigate the causes of the fire.
Due to the fire, traffic has been stopped on Makariou Street from Drosias-Stamatas Avenue and on Agiou Ioannou Street from Konstantinoupoleos Street, while the settlement of Galini was evacuated.
The mayor of Dionysos, Giannis Kalafatelis, speaking to protothema.gr, said that a battle is being fought in order to immediately control the fire:
“The situation is out of control, unfortunately things are difficult. We are trying to save the people, which is why we asked for the evacuation of the settlement of Galini. We are fighting for the houses. Everyone is trying to put out the fire with aircraft, water hoses, firefighters all in the fray, the situation is difficult.”
As the mayor had stated earlier to AMNA agency, “the situation is very difficult and the flames” are threatening “houses as well”.
Strong fire brigade forces are doing everything possible to prevent the flames from reaching the houses of the settlement “Galini”. “The efforts are hampered by the strong winds that now reach 6 on the Beaufort scale”, the spokesman of the Fire Brigade, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, stressed to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, regarding the fire that is raging between Stamata and Rodopolis.
