One man was shot dead by police after midnight early Saturday morning after a car chase ended in the Perama district, just west of the port city of Piraeus.
According to a later press release issued by Greek Police (EL AS), the victim, aged 20, was behind the wheel of a vehicle that failed to stop after being ordered to the side by motorcycle police.
The vehicle had been stolen earlier in the evening from the working-class Renti district, with a broken rear side window initially attracting the attention of patrol officers.
Authorities said police fired at the suspect when he rammed into several pursuing motorcycle officers while in reverse, and after being cornered.
Another man in the vehicle was slightly injured, while a third suspect fled the scene amid the commotion.
Six or seven police officers also sustained non-threatening injuries.
Other media reports claimed the victim had a criminal record.
