Today, the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had a teleconference with the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and the team involved in the work of the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection.
The teleconference – attended by Luxembourg and European Investment Bank President Werner Hoyer – followed a meeting between Mitsotakis and Sisi on the sidelines of the European Union-African Union Summit in Brussels on 17 February on the implementation of the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project, which is a strategic priority for both countries.
Energy diversification
According to the relevant information, the Prime Minister underlined that the electricity interconnection between Greece and Egypt – based on the Memorandum of Interconnection of Greek and Egyptian Electric Networks signed on October 14, 2021 – will contribute to the diversification of energy sources and roads in Europe and energy security of the European continent, an issue that is becoming more topical than ever due to the new landscape created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Greece and Egypt have an important role to play in this new environment thanks to their capabilities and strategic position. We are the natural bridges between Europe and Africa “, stressed Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Strategic cooperation
It should be noted that the strategic nature of this cooperation for Europe’s energy security, which will turn Greece into a green energy hub, has been recognized by both the EU and the US.
The project is part of the broader green energy transfer and cooperation plans for tackling climate change between Europe and Africa, provides an alternative to large green electricity supplies to Europe, contributes to peace and stability in the region, promotes excellent bilateral relations and strengthens Greek-Egyptian cooperation.
