Fraport is proceeding with the renovation and reconstruction of the runway of the Corfu “Ioannis Kapodistrias” airport.
According to a relevant announcement for the period from January 10, 2023 to January 24, 2023 & February 8, 2023 to February 22, 2023, the operation of the runway will be suspended. During the above periods, only air transports by ambulance helicopters will be carried out, if required, while all airport services will operate normally for the interested public.
The above works concern the complete remodeling of the runway of the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Corfu Airport, with the aim of further strengthening the airport’s safety level. This specific project will result in the ability to serve not only larger aircraft, but also an increased number of flights.
Runway shut down
These works are part of the Concession Agreement. They are carried out in terms of sustainability and respect for the island, since the support of sustainable development and social responsibility are fundamental principles of Fraport Greece.
Discontinuing the operation of the ruway is absolutely necessary, due to the size and complexity of the project, the physiology of the ground and the surrounding area. Despite all this and based on design, the specific time periods are the shortest possible period during which its operation can be suspended.
Regulatory compliance and security, at all levels, are a key priority for the company. It is worth noting that the specific works are part of a wider plan to further upgrade the already high level of safety and operation of the regional airports managed by Fraport Greece. As mentioned above, they are related to large-scale projects that the company will carry out, within the context of funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
