4,478,000 contraband cigarettes were detected and seized by inspectors of the Athens Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” Customs.

Specifically, employees of the Customs Smuggling Prosecution unit, using data from the risk analysis system and with the assistance of a sniffer dog, located the contraband cargo in 10 pallets, weighing 4.5 tons, inside a temporary storage warehouse at the airport. The cigarettes traveled on an international airline bill of lading from the United Arab Emirates and were declared to Customs as flashlights and ropes.

The contraband cigarettes were confiscated, while the amount of duties and taxes that corresponds to and represents the loss of revenue for the public, was determined at 905,254.85 euros.
